The day-to-day life of a Information Security Officer (aka ISO), a staff officer or a security/disaster recovery professional is definitely one full of excitement, boredom, concern, wonder and even sheer terror! The issues faced by these individuals and their staffs range from technical security to business security to strategic security challenges. Also, the issues range from broken equipment, buggy software and of course, human error and omission.
I have been the information security leader for several unit in armed forces of Nigeria and organizations ranging from software development for the secure communication to a major Nigeria United Nations Missions in Liberia. During my tenure in these positions, I’ve found that a collection of philosophies continue to surface that I’ve come to use and rely upon to help me through the many challenges and decisions, but also to help me communicate the challenges, problems and solutions to my management.
As stated below are some key security philosophies and “mantras” I hold. They aren’t in any particular order or hierarchy, but I trust you will find them consistent with some of your own thoughts. Perhaps, though, you will see some new ones or at least learn some new ways to look at the problems and solutions we face today.
